SKERRIES, DUBLIN
Skerries is a small town located in North County Dublin in Ireland. The town today, is part of County Fingal, and it is so called because of the Norse word 'Skere'.
Skerries was a thriving fishing port and a very important center of hand embroidery.
In the late nineteen hundreds, it became a seaside resort town, popular for sailing motorcycling and golf amongst other activities. It has also become a commuter town for Dublin City.
Red Island had a holiday camp built back in the nineteen fifties, but was knocked down in the eighties due to foreign holidays becoming a lot cheaper.
Red Island is nowadays an amenity area for the local people, with swimming areas and a playground.
The famous Skerries Mills has been restored by Fingal County Council as a local tourist attraction.
There are a couple of restored and working windmills, a museum and a coffee shop.
