SMITHFIELD, DUBLIN
Smithfield is an area located to the North of Dublin city. It's main area is a public square, which used to be an open market.
It is now named Smithfield Plaza, but known locally as Smithfield Market and Smithfield Square.
Smithfield used to be a suburb of Oxmantown, and was in St. Paul's civil parish.
Smithfield also houses the Dublin City Fruit Vegetable and Flower Market. The Council recently knocked down the Fish Market building for re-development.
The developments of residential and commercial buildings has caused the area to become very fashionable in the first ten years of the new Millenium.
But during the times between two thousand and eight and two thousand and ten, the developments stagnated due to the Irish economy and property market going down, after the post 'Celtic Tiger' economic recession kicked in.
