STILLORGAN, DUBLIN
Stillorgan is a suburb area of Dublin city in Ireland. It used to be a village, and now is in the county of Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown.
It has several housing estates and many shops. The old village centre of Stillorgan still remains, and lies close to Dublin city.
Stillorgan is known for housing the first shopping centre in Ireland, and opened in the mid-sixties. To enable the shopping centre to be built, a lot of the nineteenth century cottages were demolished.
An important architectural feature in Stillorgan is the large eighteenth century Obelisk, designed for the second Viscount Allen( Pearce), who lived in Stillorgan.
The oldest public house in Stillorgan was Bolands, which is now called McGowan's. This pub was used by famous writers, including Maurice Walsh and Brian O Nuallain.
